About The Project
Sherman Oaks Apartments is a 200-unit, 100% affordable community located steps away from the Los Angeles Valley College in Sherman Oaks, California. The project seeks off-menu density, height and open space bonus incentives in order to maximize the much-needed low-income housing units provided. Architecturally, the main design strategy is to create a friendly and inviting experience at the ground level for residents, neighbors and passers-by with landscape features and transparency. Oblique planes are created to indicate building openings and create physical connections between the interior and exterior. The typical residential unit is designed in such manner that creates opportunity for natural light and air into all interior spaces, while generating void spaces that break down the overall massing and create distinguishable building volumes, as well as light-and-shadow effects that change throughout the day and seasons of the year.
