Westminster Urban Treehouse

under construction (est. summer 2018)

Few homes in the densely populated Westside of Los Angeles are gifted with the amenity that old-growth trees may provide. Nestled between two of these trees in the Palms neighborhood of Los Angeles is a 2,400 SF home that embodies the principles of an urban tree house. It boasts a living space with an abundance of natural light and connections to the outdoors. Three continuous walls of sliding glass doors open the living room, kitchen and dining room to the backyard where one of these trees takes root. Built-in walnut paneling accents and white oak flooring echo the notions of the forest’s textural nature in a modern and open indoor/outdoor floor plan.

Upon entry and at the top of the stairs, you’re presented with a generous roof deck that provides an urban retreat within the canopy of the courtyard tree. The second-floor master suite also sits in the canopy of the courtyard tree with a luxurious steam shower and tub wet room.

The rear yard is a generous combination of board-formed concrete planters, a grass pad, and a decomposed granite activity bed. The upper mass is a dark-stained, cedar volume that alters the direction of siding from horizontal to vertical and back again. A contemporary design with traditional materials offers the Westside a new and visually pleasing intervention to the concrete jungle.

This home features 3 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, and an office and is expected to be completed in the summer of 2018.
